Weekly Principal’s Newsletter – 2017.08.16

• Thank you for a successful Mass on Tuesday. Most students were dropped off at church on time, and everyone made it to school after Mass. I rode the MITS bus with another staff member and about 35 students. The children enjoyed the ride!

• Mass next week will be Wednesday, as it will be each week until Thanksgiving.

• These newsletters will soon be sent via email and accessible through our school website. If you have not given our office a reliable email address, do so right away.

• Girls in grades 3-4-5 are invited to participate in volleyball. A sign-up sheet was posted at school today. Practice will begin August 28.

• If your child was in grades 3 or 4 at Saint Lawrence last year, they will receive their final Spring 2017 ISTEP+ scores If your child attended another school last year, you should soon receive scores from that school.

• SLCS would like to thank Becky Graham, grandmother of one of our students, for donating the beautiful potted plants that are now placed at our school entryway.

• All adult volunteers must complete the Safe and Sacred If you wish to do this training, go to: http://dol-in.org/online-safe-environment-training

• There is a benefit concert this Friday, August 18. Paul Todd and Paul Todd, Jr., renowned musical performers, are coming to Saint Lawrence Church. There will be a free-will donation and money raised will support our school. Plan to attend and invite family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Concert is 7:00-9:00 pm.

• This Friday, August 18, is our first Casual Dress Day. We ask that each student bring one or more boxes of breakfast cereal to school to donate to the Saint Lawrence Church Emergency Food Pantry.

• This Friday, August 18, is the first of our six early-release days this year. Children can be picked up at 1:00. Any child not picked up by 1:15 will go to After-School Care and WILL NOT BE* charged unless they stay after 3:15 pm.

*in last week’s newsletter, I mistakenly stated that children who came to After-School Care on Friday would be charged starting at 1:15.

• Every SLCS student will have Vision Screening on Monday, August 21. Our nurse, Chasity Evans, DNP, CPNP, will conduct the screenings at no charge.

• Also on Monday, August 21, Mrs. Evans will do Sports Physicals on all students in grades 3-4-5 who plan to participate in sports this year. To receive the free Sports Physical, students must turn in the orange Sports Physical form by tomorrow.

• On Monday, August 21, all SLCS students will view the solar eclipse in the afternoon. Students in grades K-1-2 will watch the eclipse in their classrooms on the SmartBoard, and grades 3-4-5 will go outside. We have obtained enough pairs of Eclipse Shades to accommodate grades 3-4-5. If your child is in grades 3-4-5 and you would prefer that they stay indoors, contact the office or Miss Smith or Mr. Robbins and we can arrange for your child to watch on the SmartBoard.

• Our first Parent-Teacher Organization (P.T.O.) meeting will be Tuesday, August 22. Participating in P.T.O. events is a fun and easy way to be a part of your child’s school community. The meeting is held at school, it begins at 6:30 and ends at 7:30.

• August 30 (two weeks from today) is our first Picture Day of the year. All students will have their picture taken, at no charge, for the hallway display board and yearbook. Families who wish to order picture packets may do so by filling out the order form or ordering online. An order form, as well as directions for online ordering, was sent home this week. No family is obligated to purchase pictures.

For the August 30 Picture Day, students have two options regarding clothing:

1. White Shirt Wednesday (navy pants for boys, jumpers/skirts for girls.
2. Since you may be ordering a picture packet, students may also wear formal clothes that are not school uniforms (dress for girls, dress shirt/tie/sport jacket for boys). Remember that heels are never allowed at SLCS.
